Sarah Bennett

Lead Counselor

Sarah grew up in a household where every private thought was a moral event. Not an unhappy home, and not an unloving one, but one in which wanting anything for yourself was treated as the beginning of a much larger problem.

She spent her twenties inside a community that taught the same thing more formally. She left at thirty one. It took her most of the following decade to work out which of her beliefs were actually hers and which had simply been installed.

She is not against anyone’s faith and she will not try to talk you out of yours. What she does is help people separate two things that got welded together very early, usually the feeling of wanting something and the feeling of having done wrong.

A great many of the people who ask for Sarah are not really asking whether ABDL is acceptable. They are asking whether they are a good person. Those are different questions and she is very good at pulling them apart.

Twenty five years of this work has made her extremely patient with slow progress. She does not expect anybody to put down in one phone call what took thirty years to build.

What it is like to talk to Sarah

Sarah listens for a long time before she says much. She is interested in the exact words you use about yourself, because in her experience the vocabulary people use for their own wants tells you almost everything about where the shame came from.

She will not tell you your feelings are fine and leave it there. That reassurance bounces straight off anybody who has genuinely been taught otherwise, and she knows it, because it bounced off her for years.

Instead she tends to ask where a belief came from, who first said it, and whether you would say the same sentence to somebody you loved. That last question undoes more than anything else she does.

In Sarah’s own words

There is a particular sound to religious shame and I can hear it within about a minute. It is not embarrassment. It is fear of judgment that is much older and much larger than the person on the phone.

What I remember is how lonely it was to have a private self and to have been taught that the private self was the enemy. You end up policing yourself constantly. You are never off duty.

So when somebody tells me the thing, and I do not react the way they have been braced for their entire life, there is often a very long pause. I have learned to let that pause run. Something is being rewritten in it.

The moment I love is later, when a person says something like, I told myself this week that it was alright, and I almost believed me. That is the whole job. Not me forgiving them. Them noticing they have started to.

Things people have said to Sarah

These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Sarah has answered it many times before.

  • I know God sees this and I do not know how to live with that.
  • I was raised to believe wanting anything private meant something was wrong with me.
  • I have confessed this more times than I can count and it never lifts.
  • I feel like two people and only one of them is allowed out.
  • If my church knew, I would lose every friend I have.
  • I do not want to stop. I want to stop hating myself for it.

You will not shock Sarah

Sarah is for anyone whose shame is really about morality rather than about the thing itself. She will not argue with your faith and she will not tell you what to believe. She will help you work out which of your rules are actually yours. She spent a decade doing exactly that for herself.
