Phillip Bolton

Counselor

Phillip was still a teenager when he first understood that diapers meant something to him, and he was forty one before he told a single living soul. Twenty six years of knowing and not saying. He has said since that the silence cost him far more than the telling ever did, and that he would give a great deal to have those years back.

He is from the north of England and he has been doing this work for sixteen years. He came to it the long way round, which is to say he came to it as somebody who needed it first.

He will happily tell you what took him decades to work out. That there is a particular kind of quiet in it that is very hard to explain to anybody who has not felt it. That the softness and the bulk and the sheer permission of it settle something nothing else settles. That it is not a failure of being a grown man, it is somewhere to put being a grown man down for an hour, and that the world does not end while you do.

Above all he will tell you that the acceptance is the part that changes everything, and that it almost never arrives from somewhere else first. It starts with one conversation in which nobody flinches.

What it is like to talk to Phillip

There is no script and no intake form. Phillip will not ask you to explain yourself in the first minute, because he remembers perfectly well that the first minute is the hardest part of the whole thing.

Most men who ring him have rehearsed an opening line in the car. Some of them get it out. Most of them do not, and end up saying something entirely different, or nothing at all for a moment. Phillip is comfortable with that. He will simply keep talking gently until you find your footing, and he genuinely does not mind how long that takes.

You can start anywhere. You can start with the practical questions because they feel safer. You can start in the middle. You can start by saying you are not sure you should have called. All of those are normal openings and he has heard every one of them many times.

In Phillip’s own words

There is a sound a man makes when he says it out loud for the first time. It is not crying, usually. It is more like something going slack. Twenty, thirty, forty years of holding a thing very tightly, and then he says one sentence to a stranger on the telephone and his voice changes on the spot.

I do not think people understand what it costs to carry something alone for that long. You start to believe the silence is proof that you are wrong. That if it were acceptable, surely you would have been able to say it by now.

So when somebody finally tells me, what I feel is not surprise. It is relief on their behalf, and a sort of quiet fury that they had to wait so long. I know exactly what that moment feels like from the other side, because I was forty one when I had mine.

The best part of this job is not the deep conversations later on. It is that first minute afterwards, when a man realizes the sky has not fallen in, and you can hear him starting to breathe properly.

Phillip, on what this work gives back

Things people have said to Phillip

These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Phillip has answered it many times before.

  • I have never said this to anyone in my life, not even my wife.
  • I am forty seven years old and I feel ridiculous even dialing this number.
  • I do not know if this is a sexual thing or not and it bothers me that I cannot tell.
  • I threw everything away last month and I have already bought it all again.
  • I need to tell my partner and I have no idea how to start that sentence.
  • I just want to know whether there is something actually wrong with me.

You will not shock Phillip

Phillip is a particularly good fit for men who have never said any of this out loud, sometimes for decades, and who find it easier to say it first to another man. He is unhurried and entirely unshockable. If you have ever sat across from a therapist who clearly did not understand what you were describing, Phillip is the opposite of that experience.
