Evelyn Marsh
Counselor
Evelyn was a hospice nurse for twenty two years. She sat with several hundred people in the last weeks of their lives, and she says the same thing happened often enough that it eventually changed the course of her career.
People confess at the end. Not to a priest, usually, and not anything dramatic. They tell the person who happens to be in the room at four in the morning about the thing they carried their whole life and never said. And then, very often, they say some version of the same sentence. I wish I had not waited.
She heard it enough times that she stopped being able to hear it. She left hospice work and came here because she decided somebody ought to be catching people forty years earlier.
She is unhurried in a way that is quite rare, and it is not a technique. It comes from a career in which there was never anywhere else to be and nothing to do but sit with somebody.
She is the person here most people end up talking to if they are older, if they have carried this for decades, or if they have started to grieve the years they spent not saying it.
What it is like to talk to Evelyn
Evelyn does not rush and she does not steer. If you want to talk about something else for ten minutes first, that is fine, and she will not treat it as avoidance. In her experience people arrive at the thing when they are ready and not before.
She is completely at ease with silence. Twenty two years of sitting at bedsides will do that. If you stop mid sentence she will simply wait, and it will not feel awkward.
She is also the person to talk to about regret, which is a subject a lot of counselors handle badly. She will not tell you the lost years did not matter. She will tell you what she watched people say about them at the very end.
In Evelyn’s own words
I sat with a man once at about four in the morning, three days before he died, and he told me a thing he had never told his wife of fifty one years. She was asleep in the chair beside him.
He was not frightened of it by then. That is what struck me. All of it, the whole weight of it, had simply gone, because he had run out of future to protect. And what was left was only sadness that he had waited.
I heard versions of that for twenty two years. Eventually I could not go on hearing it. So I came here, to try to reach people forty years sooner.
When somebody in their sixties or seventies tells me on the phone, I am aware of exactly what has just been avoided. They will not be saying it to a night nurse at four in the morning now. They said it today, while there is still time to do something with it.

Things people have said to Evelyn
These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Evelyn has answered it many times before.
- I am sixty eight and I feel absurd for still thinking about this.
- I have wasted my whole life not saying this to anybody.
- My husband died without ever knowing me properly.
- Is there any point starting this conversation at my age?
- I keep thinking about the person I could have been if I had spoken up at thirty.
- I do not want to die not having said it out loud once.
You will not shock Evelyn
Evelyn is for people who have waited a long time, and for anybody who has begun to mourn the years. She spent twenty two years hearing this at the very end of people’s lives and she left that work specifically so she could hear it sooner. It is not too late, and she is better placed than almost anybody to tell you why she is sure of that.
