Denise Carter

Counselor

Denise spent eleven years as a school counselor before she came to this work. She sat with a great many families in the days after a secret came out, and what struck her every single time was how much of the damage came from the delivery rather than the news.

She watched people blurt things during arguments. She watched people tell the wrong relative first and lose control of it. She watched somebody come out in a busy kitchen on Christmas Eve, which she still calls the worst timing she has ever witnessed.

She became convinced that disclosure is a skill, not a leap of faith, and that almost nobody is ever taught it. So she teaches it.

If you work with Denise on telling somebody, you will end up with an actual plan. Who first and why. What you want out of it, which is a question almost nobody has asked themselves. What you will say if they ask whether you can stop. Where you will go afterwards if it goes badly.

Fourteen years in, she is unusually calm about all of this, because she has watched hundreds of these conversations and she knows they are survivable far more often than the person about to have one believes.

What it is like to talk to Denise

Denise is structured. Not cold, but organized. She tends to slow people down, because in her experience the disclosures that go worst are the ones that happen suddenly during an argument.

She will ask you what you want the other person to do with the information. Most people have never considered it, and answering it changes what they say.

She will also make you plan for the bad version. Not to frighten you, but because she has seen too many people go into it with only one imagined outcome and no idea what to do when a different one arrives.

In Denise’s own words

In eleven years in schools I never once saw a family broken by information. I saw plenty broken by how the information arrived. Those are not the same thing and it took me years to be able to say it that clearly.

People think of telling someone as a moment of courage. It is not really. It is a piece of planning, and the courage is only the last thirty seconds of it.

What I feel when somebody works through it with me is a bit like watching somebody put their shoes on before walking somewhere far. It is not dramatic. It is just that they are so much more likely to arrive.

And when they call back to say it went alright, which is far more often than people expect, they almost always say the same thing. It was smaller than I thought it would be. That sentence is why I do this.

Things people have said to Denise

These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Denise has answered it many times before.

  • I want to tell my partner but I have no idea how to open my mouth.
  • I nearly blurted it out during a row last night.
  • Who should I tell first? I genuinely do not know.
  • What do I say if they ask me to stop?
  • I told one person and it spread. How do I get ahead of it now?
  • What if I say it and they never look at me the same way again?

You will not shock Denise

Denise is for the practical work of telling somebody. If you want to stop rehearsing it at three in the morning and actually make a plan, she is the one. She will not push you to do it before you are ready, and she will not let you do it by accident in the middle of an argument.
