Anna Kowalski
Counselor
Anna arrived in this country at twenty three with about a hundred words of English. She describes the first year as the strangest loneliness she has known, because she had a full interior life and no way to hand any of it to anybody.
She says it taught her something she has used ever since. That not having language for an experience does not mean the experience is not real, and that people will assume you have nothing to say when in fact you have far too much and no way to carry it across.
That is why she works with people who are brand new to this. Not new to the feeling, which is usually decades old, but new to the idea that it has a name at all.
A great many of her callers have found a word for it very recently. Some have known the feeling since they were small and only discovered last month that there are other people. Anna is very good at that particular moment, which is more disorienting than people expect.
Eighteen years in, she is unhurried about definitions. She does not think you need to know what you are before you are allowed to talk about it.
What it is like to talk to Anna
Anna does not require you to have a label. If you arrive saying you are not sure whether this even counts, or whether you belong on a line like this, she will tell you plainly that almost nobody is sure, and that certainty is not the entry fee.
She is patient about vocabulary. If you do not know the words, you can describe it however it comes out, badly and in the wrong order, and she will follow.
She is also good at the questions that feel too basic to ask anyone. Nothing is too obvious a question for Anna. She has spent a lot of her life needing the obvious things explained.
In Anna’s own words
For a long time after I moved here I had thoughts I could not put down anywhere. Not because they were shameful, only because I had no words. It is a very specific kind of alone.
I hear the same thing constantly from people who have just found out this has a name. They will say, I have felt this since I was six and I only learned last month that other people exist. And then they usually cry, and they always apologize for it.
That moment is not sadness. I recognize it. It is what happens when something you carried alone turns out to be ordinary, and your body does not know what to do with the relief.
What I get to do is be there for the first time somebody says it in words. Sometimes clumsy words, in the wrong order. It does not matter. I understood almost nothing the first year I was here, and people were kind to me anyway, and I have never forgotten what that was worth.

Things people have said to Anna
These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Anna has answered it many times before.
- I only found out last week that this has a name.
- I do not know if I am allowed to call. I am not sure I am really one of these people.
- I have felt this since I was small and I assumed I was the only one alive.
- I do not know the right words for any of this.
- Is it still a thing if I have never actually done any of it?
- I am scared that if I say it out loud it becomes real.
You will not shock Anna
Anna is for anybody at the very beginning. You do not need the vocabulary, you do not need a label, and you do not need to be certain you qualify. She spent a year unable to say what she meant to anybody, and she has built her whole practice around the people who cannot yet.
There is nothing you cannot say
Nothing is too strange, too private, or too much, and nothing you say will surprise Anna. Start wherever feels easiest, and take as long as you need.
