Helen Nichols

Counselor

Helen worked as a massage therapist for fourteen years before she trained in counseling, and she says she learned more about shame with her hands than she ever learned from a book.

She could tell, she says, which clients were holding something. Not the content of it, but the fact of it. Jaws that would not release. Shoulders that came up the moment anyone got near the conversation. People who apologized for their own bodies while lying on a table.

What eventually moved her into this work was noticing how many of those people described the same thing when they finally relaxed. A wish to be looked after. To stop being the responsible one for an hour. To be allowed to be small.

She is therefore very interested in the parts of this that are not about identity at all. Sleep. Nervous systems. Why a particular texture settles you and nothing else does. Why the wanting spikes in weeks when everything else is going wrong.

Ten years in, she is the person here who is most likely to ask what your week has actually been like before she asks anything else.

What it is like to talk to Helen

Helen often starts somewhere unexpected. How you are sleeping. Whether you are eating. What was happening in the days before the urge got strong. People sometimes find that surprising and then find it is the most useful conversation they have had.

She is very good with people whose shame shows up physically, as a knot, as nausea before they pick up the phone, as the thing that makes their voice go strange when they try to say it.

She talks about self-soothing without a hint of embarrassment, as an ordinary human function that everybody does and most people are oddly ashamed of.

In Helen’s own words

I spent fourteen years with my hands on people who were holding something. You learn to feel it. A jaw that will not let go, a shoulder that comes up whenever the conversation gets near.

What I noticed was that almost everyone, once they finally softened, wanted some version of the same thing. To be looked after. To not be the capable one for a little while. That is not a fetish, that is a nervous system asking for something reasonable.

So when someone tells me what they want, I do not hear anything strange. I hear a person whose body has found a way to get itself something it needs, and who has then been taught to be ashamed of the one thing that works.

The moment I look for is when their voice drops half a step. It happens when the guard comes down. You cannot fake it and you cannot rush it. When I hear it, I know we have got somewhere real, and I usually just go quiet and let them keep talking.

Things people have said to Helen

These are the kinds of sentences that open calls here. If one of them sounds like something you have thought, you are in ordinary company, and Helen has answered it many times before.

  • I feel physically sick every time I think about telling anyone.
  • It gets much worse when I am stressed and I do not understand why.
  • It is the only thing that lets me sleep and I feel pathetic about that.
  • My chest goes tight just dialing this number.
  • Why does this particular thing calm me down when nothing else does?
  • I do not have words for it. I just know how it feels in my body.

You will not shock Helen

Helen is for anyone whose shame lives in their body as much as their head, and for anyone who has noticed this is tangled up with stress, sleep or anxiety and has never been able to explain why. She treats self-soothing as an ordinary human function, because after fourteen years with her hands on people, she knows it is.
